The 6 principals of Learning and Teaching (PoLT) clearly outlines the importance of knowing your students and the links to pedagogical practice.
Students learn best when they feel their interests and wellbeing is valued.

Throughout my  placements in 5 different schools I have built positive and meaningful relationships through knowing and valuing each student, through modelling an effective communication style, sharing information about myself and my family during weekend discussions and asking questions during roll call each day such as:

"What do like the most about school?"
"What was your favourite part of the school holidays?"
"What is something that you would like to practice so as to become better at it?"
"Who is your favourite sport man or woman?"
"What time do you normally go to bed?"

I ensured that I personally spoke to every child each day (not task related) during my placements which assisted building a greater understanding of the needs and values of each student ,building positive relationships and gaining their trust.

During all of my placements it was vital for me to create an environment that was supportive and productive, and took into account  the cultural values and the individuality that each student brought to my classroom I was only able to this by knowing the students I worked with.
