Teachers create and maintain a safe and challenging environment.

When students feel safe they are more likely to take risks with their learning and I like to involve my students in setting classroom standards that allow for effective learning to take place.

When working with Grade 6 we brainstormed the concept of
What makes an effective learner?
Students worked in small  groups using a Y chart on what our classroom
Sounds like, Looks like, Feels like

From this we developed a charter of behaviour that allowed us to work together and to self regulate our behaviour. I found this to be a highly engaging activity and that made students accountable for their own learning.

Personal Goal Setting- working with students at all levels it is important to set personal goals so that students challenge themselves to move forward with their learning.
I have done this by:

Maths JournalsToday I am learning, I need some more help with?
Writers conferences - working 1:1 with  students to discuss their writing and to set goals for the future and for students to think about what they would like us to notice about their writing.
Erasers-  I appreciate this is a personal choice but I have found that by banning erasers and taking the stigma away from making mistakes, this can give students confidence to challenge themselves with their learning. A mistake is a way we know we are learning something new..
